CEH Week in Review 8/25

Its been a whirlwind week here at Colored Egg Homestead (as usual.) Here is a recap of what has been happening around the homestead.

The Olive Egg babies hatched!

Here are some of the babies at almost a week old. They're so sweet.  There are two who are not pictured because they are being loved on by the kids. <3

The winner of the Blog Warming Party Giveaway was Moon Flower! Congratulations to her and thank you to all who participated.

The Black Copper Marans babies from our very first incubator adventure are about a month old now. Out of 6 babies, 4 have turned out to be roosters!  We will be keeping the two pullets but unfortunately we are restricted from having roosters in the city and will have to find homes for the boys.

We shared our Milk & Honey Bread Recipe on the blog this week. Its one of my favorites and as a bonus you can use the leftovers to make french toast!

I've been steadily catching up on orders for my Etsy store ktnunna handmade jewelry & accessories.  These dahlias have been very popular this week. Each petal is hand cut and formed and then arranged to make a beautiful flower.

We saw a lovely rainbow over the Colored Egg Homestead this week after a rainstorm.

Its hard to believe that it is back to school time already. Summer is beginning to slip away and fall is sneaking around the corner. Its such a magical time of year, the changing of the leaves, the crisp cool air, pumpkin pie and apple cider, gatherings with family and friends. Love, hope, warmth. In the hustle and bustle of our busy lives, don't forget to slow down and enjoy the little moments that make it all worthwhile.

“Of course, fall isn't just about preparing for winter. It's also about sitting on the patio in a worn wool sweater and warming your hands over the swirl of steam rising from a coffee cup. It's about walking across a darkened yard and seeing a flight of geese cross the face of a full moon. It's about settling in, relishing sights and sensations of a world slowing down.”

  1. That's so sad that 4 of your chickens turned out to be roosters! Can I ask how you can tell this early on? I'm still learning the ways of the chicken, and I couldn't tell with our birds until they were 3-4 months old. Here's hoping you get more hens out of your new hatch!

    1. I was able to tell with the BCM's at a few weeks old. The combs and waddles on the boys are much larger and redder than the girls. Sexing them that way probably wouldn't work for some other breeds. I've had some that I was unable to tell until much later.
