Incubator Update: Day 18 - LOCKDOWN

Today is day 18 of 21 of our hatch. Today we will turn the eggs one last time, increase humidity, close the lid and wish the babies luck on their quest to reach this side of the shell.  The next time we open the incubator there will be chicks!

Good Luck little ones!

I candled each of the eggs yesterday and all 9 seem to be developing on schedule. Here is whats been happening inside the shell since our last update.

Fourteenth day - embryo gets into position suitable for breaking shell
'
Sixteenth day - scales, claws and beak becoming firm and horny

Seventeenth day - beak turns toward air cell
(source:here)

Over the next two days the yolk sac will begin to enter the chicks body cavity and the chick will occupy all of the space within the egg except for the air cell. Then on days 20-21 they will begin to 'pip' and 'unzip'. The chick will make the first little hole in the egg and then work themselves out of the egg and into the world! How amazing is that?!

I will be posting live updates on my Colored Egg Homestead Facebook Page as things start happening. I hope that you'll follow along!

  1. How exciting! We don't have an incubator, but I have seen chickens and guineas hatch out eggs and it is so fun to watch. Here's hoping they are all females haha :)
